History
A fundamental part of the Acrosstheweez history
actually begins with another fansite: albumfive.com.
On March 22, 2005, albumfive.com was released,
designed to promote and discuss Weezer's as-yet-untitled fifth album.
Many fans registered, displaced by the inexplicable move made by Weezer
to change its board to a different, disliked format. Despite albumfive's
move to be the first new home for boardless fans, another, more
established site, weezernation, added a board, and attracted the general
majority of the fans. Gradually, albumfive's population shrunk, until
all that was left was a shell of the former juggernaut: only a group of
about 10 members remained and were hardcore posters till the forums and
the site were taken down on June 28th, a date with many rumors... This
was a very hard experience for the hardcore posters, who communicated
every day and kept the boards and of course the site alive. On the same
date, Phili and Ania the two members with the most posts
created free forums with the help of some other old members, like
Lespaul33; Runningrivers; Death_possible_Destruction
and Bias, the .net.ms url was also registered that day, after
Phili came up with that name and after a democratic vote for the
name of the site. The day afterwards, another hardcore member
fridyrls managed to get the old boards back and put them in a design
chosen by Ania, the characteristic Acrosstheweez green style!
Acrosstheweez 1.0 was born! Phili then managed to organise a
partnership between Acrosstheweez and Weezer.se, which was the beginning
of the interesting Acrosstheweez features. Already in mid-August
Acrosstheweez hit the maximum of the best features ever experienced by
the boardies of the site: Contests with Weezer prizes; Online Radio;
Wallpapers; Signatures; Avatars; slogans; Gaming Servers. The boardies
got to know each other better and better, and slowly very old members,
who were seen for the last time in March rejoined the community, and
many new fans were attracted from various sources, such as Weezer's
official street team,
JONAS.
But this Weeztopia didn't last very long. Near the end of August,
several key posters (Lizzie, Ania, and Nicole)
announced that their time on the boards would be severely depleted due
to their entering of the University (another member, DoozerRocker,
also began university). Hearing this Runningrivers, who was
running the fansite Meerez
created her own boards, got the idea that this could maybe be the end of
Acrosstheweez. Which was certified by end of September, when
Acrosstheweez 1.0 had to be taken down due to numerous reasons, shortly
after the exciting announcement of Acrosstheweez 2.0. ATW 2.0 was
originally ready for release in early September. However, Ania
decided that the site was not as good as it could be and the
administrators decided to push back the release. On September 20th,
visitors to the forum were greeted by a surprising message: "Across the
Weez is closed, forever!" The Acrosstheweez administration team was
separated... Ania was busy at university, and totally gave up the
message boards, Phili lost all hope for Acrosstheweez and was
certain, even if he were to reopen it, that nobody would come back, and
the third admin fridyrls had lost interest in Weezer. In the time
between ATW 1.0 and 2.0, everything advanced slowly for the old
Acrosstheweez fans. The Meerez
boards weren't busy at all, most of the members gave up message
boards, and Phili missed the community so much, he started to
help his old partner Weezer.se and posted at Weezernation, until, he
came to the point, that this wasn't a real exchange for Acrosstheweez.
He than started to re-establish contact with former members, and
Runningrivers showed him the
Meerez boards. Shortly after that point, he decided with
Runningrivers to reopen Acrosstheweez. In short, she agreed. The
original, nearly ready ATW 2.0 ( now called "Unreleased Acrosstheweez
1.5", screenshot coming soon!) which was still on Phili's server
was totally reworked between October 28th and November 2nd by him. And
after over a month of silence for the outside world, on November 3rd,
Acrosstheweez 2.0 opened finally. However the ATW 2.0 time is now
considered as a rather weird time, more like a transition, due to the
boards that didn't really belong to Acrosstheweez and the indeed
outdated design. So on December 8th Phili decided to do a big relaunch
to bring back the glory lost in September. Meanwhile we're Acrosstheweez
2.5 New Boards (with the best design ever had at A5/ATW), new site, lots
of visitors, new members, everything running great and hosted at
Weezer.se.
February 11th: Phili takes the site down announcing a server for
Acrosstheweez only, a .com url, a new version of the shorly before
programmed toolbar... The site appears on the international Weezer day
2006 to give people their drug back, the forums. Shortly after having
the new domain Phili organized as the first ever fansite a webchat with
Karl which ran great and lots of new informations went public. On March
22nd 2006 when Across the Weez celebrated its first birthday ATW was
again improved by a new design and a media section. Overall 2006 was a
silent year for both Weezer and ATW. That year ATW added 2 hosted
partnersites: EOS and WeezerJonas. In 2007, short before ATW's second
birthday, the site got a new look for both the Website and the Forums.
I thank everybody of our old Acrosstheweez group, because everybody
helped a big part in the evolution of the site!
Yours sincerely,
Phili
*Special thanks to Bill (Liam), who reworked the story
with me*
